For the Cake
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix, about 15 ounces
  • Ingredients required on the cake mix package
  • 2 medium ripe bananas, mashed
For the Banana Cream Filling
  • 1 package instant banana cream pudding mix, about 3.4 ounces
  • 1 3/4 cups cold milk
For the Topping
  • 1 container whipped topping, thawed
  • 2 to 3 medium ripe bananas, sliced
Optional Garnishes
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Crushed chocolate cookies
  • Chocolate syrup

Method

  1. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix package directions. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan
  2. Prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the package instructions. Fold in the mashed bananas until evenly distributed
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake according to the package directions, checking the center with a toothpick for doneness
  4. Let the cake cool for 10 to 15 minutes
  5. Use the rounded handle of a wooden spoon to poke evenly spaced holes throughout the cake
  6. Whisk the instant banana pudding mix with cold milk until smooth and thickened.
  7. Spoon the pudding over the cake, spreading it evenly and gently working it into the holes.
  8. Cover the cake and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until thoroughly chilled
  9. Spread the whipped topping evenly over the chilled cake.
  10. Arrange the sliced bananas over the topping just before serving.
  11. Add chocolate shavings, cookie crumbs, or a light chocolate drizzle if desired.
  12. Slice with a sharp knife and serve chilled.

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use a devil's food cake mix.
  • Homemade whipped cream can be used instead of prepared whipped topping.
  • Keep the finished cake refrigerated and enjoy within about 3 days.
