Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 box vanilla or white cake mix
  • Eggs, according to package directions
  • Vegetable oil, according to package directions
  • Water, according to package directions
  • 1 cup Fruity Pebbles cereal
For the Cereal Milk Soak
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup Fruity Pebbles cereal
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
For the Whipped Topping
  • 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Fruity Pebbles cereal, plus extra for topping

Method

  1. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix package directions, usually to 350°F. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan
  2. Prepare the cake batter according to the package directions. Gently fold in 1 cup of Fruity Pebbles
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until the center is set and a toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  4. While the cake bakes, combine 1 cup whole milk and 1/2 cup Fruity Pebbles. Let the cereal infuse the milk for about 20 minutes
  5. Strain the cereal from the milk and stir the infused milk together with the sweetened condensed milk.
  6. Let the baked cake cool for about 15 to 20 minutes. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to make evenly spaced holes across the cake.
  7. Slowly pour the cereal milk mixture over the cake, allowing it to absorb into the holes
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  9. Beat the cold heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft to medium peaks form
  10. Spread the whipped cream evenly over the chilled cake.
  11. Sprinkle Fruity Pebbles over the top just before serving.
  12. Slice into squares and serve chilled

Notes

  • Do not overbake the cake, as a tender crumb absorbs the cereal milk more effectively.
  • Pour the milk soak slowly so it distributes evenly.
  • Chill the cake thoroughly before adding the whipped topping.
  • Add the Fruity Pebbles garnish close to serving time to help maintain their crunch.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
  • For a less-sweet cake, reduce the powdered sugar in the whipped cream or slightly decrease the condensed milk in the soak.
