Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Gel food coloring, optional

Method

  1. Beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Add the powdered sugar gradually, mixing on low speed after each addition to prevent a cloud of sugar.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt. Mix until combined
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk and beat until the buttercream becomes light and fluffy.
  5. Beat the finished buttercream for another 1 to 2 minutes until smooth.
  6. If desired, divide the frosting into bowls and tint with gel food coloring.
  7. Transfer the buttercream to piping bags fitted with your preferred decorating tips, or use an offset spatula to frost and decorate your cake.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature butter for the smoothest frosting.
  • Do not use melted butter because it can make the buttercream too soft.
  • For cleaner piping, make sure the frosting is firm enough to hold its shape.
  • If the buttercream becomes too soft while decorating, chill it briefly before continuing.
  • For smoother frosting, press and stir the finished buttercream with a spatula to remove excess air bubbles.
  • Store leftover buttercream in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Allow refrigerated buttercream to soften at room temperature and mix again before decorating.
