Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 2 cups prepared frosting, such as buttercream
  • 1 piping bag
  • 1 piping tip
  • 1 coupler, optional
  • Food coloring, optional
  • Parchment paper for practice, optional

Method

  1. Choose a piping tip that matches your desired design and fit it into the piping bag.
  2. Place the piping bag inside a tall glass and fold the top over the rim.
  3. Add frosting until the bag is about half to two-thirds full.
  4. Press the frosting toward the piping tip to remove large air pockets.
  5. Twist the top of the bag to keep the frosting contained.
  6. Hold the twisted section with your dominant hand and use your other hand to guide the tip.
  7. Practice piping simple lines, stars, dots, or swirls onto parchment paper.
  8. Maintain steady pressure as you decorate your cake, cupcakes, cookies, or pastries.
  9. Stop squeezing before lifting the piping tip away from the surface.
  10. Refill the bag as needed rather than overfilling it.
